In this present decade, it’s been evident that almost allindustries of various sectors have chiefly focussed more and more onone factor-automation. The most valuable technology which is helping achieveautomation is, undoubtedly, Artificial Intelligence or AI. Now, what if wecould incorporate this valuable piece of technology to improve our existinghealthcare facilities and help us in staying true to the clichédsaying, “Health is Wealth”.
The fields of how AI can be utilized in healthcare are immense. Detecting signs of cancer from medical imagery, developing customized treatment plans for patients are just some instances. Even sensors in our smartphones or smartwatches could monitor our health, comparing and evaluating the data of one’s health conditions with a thousand others, thereby predicting the onset of symptoms. What’s more the human workforce (doctors and such) will then be freed up to perform higher value tasks, leaving the primary stages in the hands of a so-called digitized medical guide. How shall it benefit? Well, for one thing, efficiency and performance in our hospitals shall skyrocket. Access to AI-powered intelligent technologies can boost productivity and accessibility of the existing resources such that they can serve more patients with the dual benefits of improved outcomes and at lower expenses.
Let us take a look at “Tencent AIMIS“, an AI-enabled imaging software used in People’s Hospital of Nanshan in Shenzhen, China. Earlier, gastroenterologists had to inspect over 1,000 gastroscopy pictures to search for possible esophageal cancer symptoms, cancer which appears in the food pipe. The AI system screens through each report and notifies the doctor if further inspection is needed. Developed by Tencent, this AI system shall prove useful in the coming years to younger doctors in making more precise diagnoses. Rated 90 percent accurate in diagnosing preliminary esophageal cancer, Tencent AIMIS is now used in more than 100 hospitals across China.
It’s not surprising thereby, as shown in a recent survey, that most healthcare companies are increasingly looking to partner with technology firms, under the pressure of being digitized and make full use of big data. It is thus inevitable that Artificial Intelligence will have a big responsibility in the coming years, as the case of Tencent AIMIS clearly portrays how a self-thinking system can not only improve productivity but also act as a reliable guide.
